Welcome to PWDN

Persons With Disability Initiative Nigeria (PWDN) is a non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting the rights, dignity, and inclusion of persons with disabilities across Nigeria. We work tirelessly to create an inclusive society where every individual, regardless of their physical or mental abilities, has equal opportunities to thrive and contribute meaningfully to national development.

Our mission is to advocate for policy reforms, provide support services, and raise awareness about disability rights. Through community engagement, capacity building, and strategic partnerships, we empower persons with disabilities to live independently and participate fully in all aspects of society.

Our Vision for an Inclusive Nigeria

We envision a Nigeria where persons with disabilities are recognized as valuable members of society, with full access to education, healthcare, employment, and social services. Our commitment is to break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and build bridges of understanding and acceptance.

Through advocacy, education, and direct intervention, we strive to create sustainable change that transforms lives and communities. Together, we can build a more inclusive, equitable, and compassionate nation for all.

Be Positive About Disabilities

United Nations Perspective on Persons with Disabilities

The United Nations recognizes that persons with disabilities have the same human rights as everyone else, including the right to participate fully in society. The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) emphasizes that disability is an evolving concept resulting from the interaction between persons with impairments and attitudinal and environmental barriers.

Persons with disabilities include those who have long-term physical, mental, intellectual, or sensory impairments which, in interaction with various barriers, may hinder their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others. The UN promotes a paradigm shift from viewing persons with disabilities as objects of charity to recognizing them as subjects with rights, capable of claiming those rights and making decisions for their lives.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) explicitly reference persons with disabilities, ensuring that development is inclusive and leaves no one behind. The UN calls on all nations to promote accessibility, eliminate discrimination, and ensure equal opportunities for persons with disabilities in all spheres of life.

"Disability is not inability. With the right support, opportunities, and inclusive environments, persons with disabilities can achieve their full potential and contribute significantly to society's progress."
